Foods to Avoid During IVF

Foods to Avoid During IVF

Foods to avoid during IVF include:

  • Refined carbohydrates and sugary foods such as white bread, pasta, sweets, and sugary snacks, as they cause blood sugar spikes that can negatively impact fertility.
  • Excessive caffeine intake; it is advisable to limit caffeine to one to two cups of coffee or tea per day - ideally none at all
  • Alcohol, which has been linked to reduced fertility rates and should be avoided completely during IVF.
  • High-mercury fish like shark, swordfish, and king mackerel because mercury can harm reproductive health; instead, choose low-mercury fish such as salmon and sardines.
  • Processed foods that are high in unhealthy fats, preservatives, and artificial ingredients, including processed meats, packaged snacks, and ready meals.
  • Soy products in excess, as they may disrupt hormone balance; limit consumption of soy milk, tofu, and other soy-based foods.
  • Raw or undercooked foods, such as sushi, raw meat, or unpasteurized dairy, due to increased risk of infection.
  • Fried foods and foods high in trans fats and saturated fats, which may negatively affect hormone balance and weight.

Staying clear of these foods helps maintain a balanced hormone level, improves egg and sperm quality, supports a healthy uterine environment, and increases the chances of successful IVF outcomes.
