Egg Freezing – Preserve Your Fertility, Embrace Your Future
At HOPE Fertility & IVF, we understand that life doesn’t always follow a set timeline. Whether you're focusing on your career, personal growth, or simply waiting for the right time, egg freezing allows you to safeguard your fertility and keep your options open.
What Is Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation treatment that allows you to store your eggs at their current age and quality for future use. The eggs are carefully collected from your ovaries, frozen using advanced vitrification technology, and safely stored until you are ready to begin your family.
By freezing your eggs earlier in life—when they are generally healthier—you preserve your reproductive potential and give yourself greater flexibility about when you choose to conceive. Egg freezing allows you to safeguard your fertility and maintain the opportunity to have a biological child in the future. Female fertility naturally declines with age, particularly after the mid-30s. Both the number and quality of eggs decrease over time. Frozen eggs remain the same age and quality as they were at the time of retrieval. If you need medical treatment such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery that could affect your ovaries, egg freezing can help protect your fertility before treatment begins. Whether you are focusing on your career, continuing your studies, travelling, or waiting for the right partner, egg freezing offers greater control and peace of mind about your future options. The egg freezing process is safe, carefully monitored, and tailored to your individual needs. Your journey begins with a comprehensive fertility assessment, including hormone testing and an ultrasound scan to evaluate your ovarian reserve. This helps us understand how your body may respond to treatment and allows us to create a personalised plan. You will take hormonal medication for approximately 10–14 days to encourage your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. During this time, you will be closely monitored with scans and blood tests to ensure everything is progressing safely and effectively. Egg collection is a short, minimally invasive procedure performed under sedation. Using ultrasound guidance, the eggs are gently retrieved from the ovaries. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a day. Before freezing, each egg is carefully evaluated by our experienced embryology team. We use advanced imaging technology, including the Spindle Scope, which allows us to assess egg maturity and structural integrity in a gentle, non-invasive way. This helps ensure that only mature eggs with the best developmental potential are selected for freezing — giving you reassurance that the eggs stored today represent your strongest possible chance for the future. Your mature eggs are rapidly frozen using vitrification, an advanced flash-freezing method that protects them from damage and preserves their quality. Your frozen eggs are stored in specialised cryogenic tanks under strict safety and monitoring protocols. They remain safely preserved until you decide you are ready to use them. Under Maltese law, ovarian stimulation cycles for fertility preservation can be carried out until a woman reaches the age of 46. However, it is strongly advisable to consider egg freezing at a younger age, ideally in the late 20s to early 30s, when egg number and quality are typically at their healthiest. While treatment is legally permitted up to age 46, the success of egg freezing largely depends on the age at which the eggs are retrieved. Freezing eggs earlier generally increases the likelihood of achieving a successful pregnancy in the future. We combine clinical expertise with advanced lab technology and a truly personalised approach. Our team is dedicated to supporting you with expertise, sensitivity, and professionalism throughout your journey. We combine cutting-edge vitrification techniques with advanced imaging tools such as the Spindle Scope to assess egg maturity and quality before freezing, ensuring the highest standards of care. Every treatment plan is tailored to your medical profile, timeline, and reproductive goals, ensuring you feel informed, supported, and confident at every step. Why Consider Egg Freezing?
